Prog rock legend Steve Hackett has announced details of the next set of reissues from his extensive back catalogue. Following on from 2015's ‘Premonitions’ box set, which revisited the early days of his career, the former Genesis guitarist will release 'The Charisma Years' - an expansive vinyl set - on 27th May 2016, as well as deluxe CD/DVD additions of some of his earliest solo albums.
Concentrating on material culled from his years signed to the label (1975-1983), 'The Charisma Years' features all of Steve’s albums from that period, plus a wealth of bonuses, which includes a double LP of a newly mixed concert recorded on the 1979 Spectral Mornings tour, and a full LP and 12-inch EP of Steve's appearance at the Reading Festival in August 1981. The lavish set also includes a special 12" live LP entitled “I Know What I Like’, which features Steve's band performing the Genesis classic at Oxford’s New Theatre, plus several tracks recorded live at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 1979.
Those who pre-order the set will also receive a limited edition A3 poster signed by Steve Hackett himself. Pre-orders are being taken here, where full details including the track listing can also be found.
In addition to the box set, three of Hackett's albums from the period will also get a deluxe make-over as 2CD/DVD (5.1) editions; these are 'Please Don't Touch', 'Spectral Mornings' and 'Defector'. 1978's 'Please Don’t Touch' and 1979's 'Spectral Mornings' have been newly mixed in 5.1 surround sound by Steven Wilson from the original multi-track tapes, while 'Defector', from 1980 includes a new remaster of the album, a CD of Steve’s set at the Reading Festival in 1980, and a DVD featuring a pseudo 5.1 surround sound up-mix derived from the original stereo masters. Full details of all three sets can be viewed below.
Speaking about the early releases, Hacket says; “on ‘Please Don't Touch’ I'd finally embarked on a permanent solo career. The strength of the ideas combined with the extraordinary people who had carried them out was a revelation to me. I wanted to be invisible on this record and just to be the catalyst. Each track functioned like an excerpt from a sampler album. Different teams met different styles and that pan-genre approach has stayed with me up to the present day"
Going on to talk about Steve Wilson's contribution to the project, the guitarist says; "It's no coincidence that Steven Wilson offered to remix this stuff in 5.1 surround sound. He'd originally been inspired by ‘Please Don’t Touch’ when he was barely a teenager.”
Steve Hackett made his mark as guitarist for Genesis, and was the first member to release a solo album, before leaving the band in 1977. Hackett’s has established himself as a musical icon and pioneer of the prog rock genre, during a career that has endured for four decades.
