Noddy Holder has recalled seeing the lampooning of Slade by comedians Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer for the first time. Speaking at the Classic Rock Roll of Honour, the former front man said that the duo’s take had been an amusing tribute.

Glam rock icon Noddy Holder has recalled seeing the lampooning of his band Slade by comedians Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer for the first time. Speaking exclusively to Gigs And Festivals at the Classic Rock Roll of Honour, the former frontman of the 1970s’ sensations said that the duo’s take on their antics had been an amusing tribute.
The MBE holder, who was attending the event, which was held at Camden’s Roundhouse last Wednesday (11th Nov 2015), was there to collect the ‘Showman’ award. Other winners included Alice Cooper, who picked up the ‘Classic Album’ gong, Joe Satriani, who was named ‘The Maestro’ and Queen, who were crowned ‘Living Legends’.
Recalling the mid-1990s’ resurgence in interest in his former band, Holder was forthright in who helped steer a new generation towards them. Holder said: “When Oasis covered ‘Cum On Feel The Noize’ it did reinvigorate [interest in Slade] because their following had heard the song and went and investigated our music.”
However, it wasn’t only the Gallagher brothers who came in for praise. The singer continued: “It certainly helped, but so did Vic and Bob, doing the Slade spoof on the ‘Smell Of Reeves And Mortimer’.” ‘The Smell Of Reeves And Mortimer’ ran on the BBC for two series between 1993 and 1995 and saw the pair take on the glam rock supergroup with their ‘Slade In Residence’ and ‘Slade On Holiday’ sketches.
Going on to recall seeing the series for the first time, Holder said: “I knew Vic and Bob anyway, and they sent me the tapes beforehand.”
He continued; “Bob [Mortimer] had got Dave [Hill, guitarist] to a T. Vic [Reeves] was near as me, but Bob was really good,” concluding; “So yeah, they really reinvigorated us.”
The Classic Rock ‘Roll Of Honour’ recognises the achievements of those from the world of hard rock. Although traditionally held in London, the 2016 awards are set to take place in Tokyo, Japan. The move follows a similar overseas relocation, which saw the 2014 event held in Los Angeles.
