Southern blues rockers Gov’t Mule kicked off their European tour on Sunday night (22nd October 2017), with a show in front of a packed house at Dublin’s Academy. Playing their first ever Irish date, the celebrated four-piece brought with them a musical revolution that fans said had been more than worth the wait.
Following the theme of their recently released ‘Revolution Come… Revolution Go’ album, it was to the tones of famous ‘revolution’ songs – by The Beatles, T.Rex, Tracy Chapman, and others – that the band ambled on stage, kicking off with ‘Hammer And Nails’.
Letting the music do the talking, it was with a brief “How are you doing?” that bandleader Warren Haynes greeted the audience, before launching into the funky shuffle of debut album classic ‘Mule’. “It’s good to see ya!”, the singer / guitarist continued.
Despite Haynes’ skills rightly taking the centre stage for the most part, all four instrumentalists shone as the night progressed. With the nimble fingers of bassist Jorgen Carlsson introducing the subtle ‘Thorazine Shuffle’, it was the epic keys of Danny Louis that added colour to the glorious musical textures being created. Original member Matt Abts subtle phrasing meanwhile, accentuated, with the drummer never over-playing where the slightest of touches would suffice.
Accentuating the set list, the band played a number of covers as well as their own tracks. Tackling numbers by - as expected - The Allman Brothers, in ‘Dreams’ and closer ‘Soulshine’, they also surprised with a brace of Van Morrison numbers. Opting to open their second set with the Belfast born singer’s ‘Ballerina’, and closing the evening with ‘Tupelo Honey’, the band showed off their ability to effortlessly recreate the work of others.
Signing off on what had been a special night for the Dublin crowd, Haynes said; “We’re extremely honoured to be invited here to play. We've had a wonderful time”. He concluded; “You're a very, very beautiful audience, and we thank you very much”.
