Electric Picnic 2018
got under way on Friday (31st August 2018), with the cream of contemporary acts proving a massive hit with the capacity crowd. With the emotive Walking On Cars, striking Chvrches and hip-hop superstar Kendrick Lamar appearing on the main stage, and a host of other acts appearing across the arena, there was something for both young and old in Stradbally.

Taking place in Co.Laois from 31st August – 2nd September 2018, Electric Picnic is Ireland’s largest boutique music and arts festival.

With 55,000 attendees arriving on site for day one, the main arena filled to the sounds of Northern Irish indie rockers Ash. Mixing tracks from their recently release ‘Islands’ set with hits like ‘A Life Less Ordinary’, ‘Shining Light’ and an out of the world ‘Girl From Mars’, the Larne band proved a big hit.

Band of the moment Chvrches followed, with lead singer Lauren Mayberry’s expressive moves proving almost as powerful as her voice. With tracks like ‘Miracle’ and ‘Leave A Trace’ the band proved one of the highlights of the day.

Ireland’s own Walking on Cars meanwhile raised the roof with their earnest anthems. Looking relaxed with acoustic guitar in hand, front man Patrick Sheehey‘s earnest performance drew some of the loudest cheers of the day.

However for some, Electric Picnic belonged to one man; rap luminarie Kendrick Lamar. With cutting rhymes that were matched only by his street attitude, the U.S. performer owned the EP stage. Ripping through a host of tracks from last year’s ‘Damn’ album, Lamar proved exactly why he’s currently one of music’s hottest properties.

Electric Picnic continues on Saturday, with R&B icons N.E.R.D and Bristol dance pioneers Massive Attack set to headline. Sunday will see electro punks The  Prodigy close the event.
