Irish guitar player Eamon O’Neill has released his new single, and debuted the video for the track ‘Above The Clouds’. Labelled as; “The best undiscovered guitarist in Ireland”, the instrumental is the player’s first original piece to be released in twelve months.
Focusing on melody, speed and harmony, the out of this world ‘Above The Clouds’ takes its title from the explosive track’s optimistic feel and pace. Clocking in at just over four minutes, it eschews guitar shredding in favour of the measured technical approach of Eamon’s influences, who include Iron Maiden’s Adrian Smith, and guitars wizards Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.
Says Eamon; “It’s been a year since I released something new, and I wanted to record a song that would appeal to both guitarists, and non-guitar players. The goal was to create something that you could hum along to – which wasn’t easy given the speed of the song!”
Recorded and produced by Eamon during a two week period in August 2017, Eamon says that ‘Above The Clouds’ was something of a challenge; “I’ve never been a shredder who crams in as many notes as I can”, says the former Pre-Med player; “but in this case, I pushed myself to be fast, but with an aim for metronomic accuracy. With some parts of the song, I initially wrote the phrases, and then had to spend a day learning them”.
Eamon has also taken himself out of his comfort zone for 'Above The Clouds', experimenting with techniques and sounds that are new to him. Referring to his use of Whammy pedal, Eamon says; "For the middle section of the song, I wanted something out of the ordinary. I was at a loss as to what to do, and then it suddenly hit me, as these things tend to do, when you're struggling sleep at 3am".
