Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Mastodon, and a host of others have all taken home awards at this years' Metal Hammer Golden Gods event. Taking place at London's IndigO2 on Monday Night (12th June 2017), the awards celebrated the achievements of those in the worlds of rock and metal.
For more than 30 years, Metal Hammer has been the biggest heavy metal magazine on the planet, and following a turbulent end to 2016, and their resurrection in 2017, the Defenders Of The Faith threw the party of all parties for their readers at this years' Golden God Awards 2017 in association with Orange Amplification.
Presented by WWE megastar Chris Jericho, the unique and special night was all about the fans, with live performances from headliners Mastodon, stoner rockers Clutch, heroes of the moment Orange Goblin, and 'Breakthrough Band Of The Year' award winners Avatar.
Speaking about the event, which was attended by some of the biggest names in the genre, Metal Hammer editor Merlin Alderslade said; "After a difficult end to last year in which the future of our magazine looked uncertain, we couldn’t have thought of a better way to celebrate our comeback. From the one and only Chris Jericho returning to host our awards for a record-breaking third time, to seeing legends like Tony Iommi, Tom Morello and Chuck D walk out on stage, to honouring the contemporary names who make our scene great, it was the kind of evening that only the Golden Gods can provide."
Alderslade contnued; "As always, though, the most important thing was the metal community coming together again – and we salute everyone who has supported us in the last year and beyond, be it by coming to the show, buying our magazine or simply spreading the good word of heavy.”
The godfathers of metal, Black Sabbath, collected the evening's main honour: the Golden God award presented by Roadrunner Records. Founding member and metal legend Tony Iommi was on hand to collect the gong.
Opening the show were riff veterans Orange Goblin, whose front man Ben Ward along with partner Sandie Soriano had been instrumental in rallying around the magazine's staff when the publishing team behind it collapsed in late 2016. Fittingly, the pair received the 'Defender Of The Faith' award for their efforts.
Other winners on the night included Gojira, whose 'Magma' was named 'Album Of The Year', thrash metal legends Exodus who were named this years' 'Inspiration', and Rap metal supergroup Prophets Of Rage, who picked up the 'Spirit Of Hammer award'.
Iron Maiden’s role-playing mobile game, 'Legacy Of The Beast' meanwhile, took the 'Best Game' accolade, while Airbourne’s kamikaze guitarist Joel O’Keeffe picked up the Dimebag Darrell ‘Shredder’ award, and tour de force Devin Townsend was bestowed the title of 'Riff Lord'.
Taking place annually, this years' Metal Hammer Golden Gods was the fifteenth time the event had been held. Stay tuned for eonmusic's exclusive coverage, including interviews with Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, Chuck D and B-Real from Prophets of Rage, and more.
