Rising Indie Singers You'll Want to Emulate.

Indie music is often inspired by mellow moods, poetic lyrics, and a slight gothic twist. However, that’s not all there is to this genre. Indie, which is a short word for independence, is introspective music with minimalist low tones and poetic lyric styles that exude melancholy.

Though it has been quite popular in the last decade, it is now becoming one of the most popular genres for a lot of people, especially teenagers. This genre seemingly overlaps with other styles of music, creating a new type of music that a lot of indie bands use in their work. If you want to hop on that bandwagon and sing like an indie singer, emulating indie stars will help you do this. So, make sure that you check out the following rising indie singers.

Clairo
We’ve already mentioned that indie music is low and dreamy, but Clairo takes it to a whole new level. The 22-year-old singer is one of the best in her field, as she symbolizes the dreamy nature of indie music. Clairo has been in the industry for a long while, but it was her song “Pretty Girl” that made her the rising singer she is now. The dreamy quality of the song is what makes it a good example of this genre. Other songs by Clairo that are also easy to perform include “4EVER” and “Bubble Gum,”. So, if you want to practice singing indie music, starting with Clairo music will be a good idea.

Simon Ward
The lead singer of The Strumbellas does an outstanding job of singing to the blend of indie rock, folk music, and pop music. The Strumbellas haven’t exactly started their career recently, but they have risen in popularity with their single “Spirits,” which was released back in 2016. Due to that unique mixture of indie rock and folk, you’d notice how upbeat his vocals are compared to other indie music artists. However, singing may not come naturally to a lot of singers. That’s why vocal training tips are essential for a beginner as it will hone their skills and condition their vocal cords to sing high and low notes. Keep in mind that it took vocalists like Ward years to perfect these skills and become knowledgeable of the foundations of this craft.

Phoebe Bridgers
Phoebe Bridgers is another excellent example of dreamy indie-pop music. Similar to the quiet quality of Clairo’s music, Bridgers’s songs might sound sadder and more mature to a lot of people. If you want to start with easy-to-perform songs that have somewhat melancholic tones, Bridgers’ latest release “I Know the End” will be a good start for you. This song belongs to her second album “Punisher” that was released this year, which carries darker undertones compared to her previous albums. So, emulating Bridgers music means that some of that gloominess will make their way into the way you sing and, later, into your songs.

Kevin Parker
The sole vocalist of Tame Impala is still releasing music that is faithful to the indie genre. Their recent album, which was written by Parker alone, featured a mixture of psychedelic rock, indie rock, and pop. Despite the controversy revolving around this album, it is still one of the most highly regarded albums that Tame Impala has come out with. When listening to the music, you can tell how much detail was put into the songs as you take note of the micro-movements existing in the same tune. In addition to this, emulating Kevin Parker might be a good advanced practice, especially that Parker has a very distinct voice and tricky vocals, which cannot be easily recreated. The quality of these vocals can be also attributed to production tricks, which use specialized programs to produce these vocals.

Paul Klein
The lead singer of the band LANY sings to electronic, alternative, and indie-pop music. Their music has all the hallmarks of indie tracks and Klein’s vocals are a great chance for you to improve your vocals. The band’s latest release “You” is a good example of indie music and emulating Klein’s singing style will make harnessing your vocal skills easier.

Now that you know some of the best rising indie stars, make sure to take your time as you emulate their vocal patterns. Remember that you also need to do some exercises before working on your vocals to ensure that you perfect them and to prevent hurting your vocal cords. Breathing exercises, good posture, hydration, and warming up your voice are essential steps to do just that. If you’re considering a serious career in music, make sure to make these steps a daily habit. Keep in mind that you need to always practice and emulate other signers to reach that perfect pitch.
