As summer approaches, rock and heavy metal fans are looking to select a festival to attend this year. There is something for everyone, whether you are holidaying in the UK or travelling to Europe. Let’s take a look at the best rock and heavy metal festivals in summer 2022.
The alternative genre is as popular as ever, with summer festivals set to sell-out, so make sure you act quick to avoid disappointment. Rock music has the ability to inspire, making it a suitable theme for video games like Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, which allows players to emulate rock gods by playing songs like Rock and Roll All Nite by Kiss. The popularity of rock has led to innovations in other areas of the entertainment industry, such as online casinos. The Rock the Reels Megaways slot features all the typical elements of a heavy metal group and can be played via bingo at Paddy Power. Evidently, the popularity of rock has contributed to the success of these gaming titles amongst heavy metal fans.

Download Festival, Donington ParkThere really is something for every rock and heavy metal fan at Download, which takes place at Donington Park from 10-12 June 2022. The BBC has reported that 100,000 rockers are expected to attend. The festival features four stages, all with a killer alt line-up: the Main Stage, the Second Stage, the Avalanche Stage hosted by Kerrang! Radio and the Dogtooth Stage.

NME has reported that veteran rockers Kiss will headline on Friday 10 June. On Saturday 11 June, English heavy metal band Iron Maiden will perform as part of their Legacy of the Beast tour. Megadeth are set to appear on the Second Stage, while Brazilian heavy metal band Sepultura will perform on the Dogtooth Stage. On Sunday 12 June, the Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro will headline, with American nu metal band Korn also part of the line-up. Steel Panther will feature on the Second Stage.

If you want to travel further afield this summer, you can join European rock fans in mosh pits in Spain and Germany:
Mad Cool Festival, MadridIf you are heading to Spain this summer, one option is the Mad Cool Festival, which takes place at the Espacio Mad Cool in Madrid from 6 to 10 July 2022. The open-air festival features headliners, including the rock bands Metallica, The Killers, Muse and Queens of the Stone Age.
Rock am Ring, Nürburgring and Rock im Park, NurembergIf a mixture of top-quality rock bands and German heavy metal are your thing, you should head to Germany for Rock am Ring, which takes place at Nürburgring from 3 to 5 June 2022, or Rock im Park, which is held simultaneously in Nuremberg. All acts perform on one day at Nürburgring then perform in Nuremberg the next day, so that all the acts appear at both festivals over the three days. The festivals are extremely popular with a combined sell-out capacity of 150,000. At Nürburgring, Green Day will perform on Friday 3 June, with Muse headlining on Saturday 4 June. Danish rock band Volbeat will play on Sunday 5 June.

Hopefully, this guide has given you some food for thought if you are looking to see the best rock and heavy metal bands at a festival this summer. If you are holidaying at home this year, then Download Festival at Donington Park is highly recommended due to the sheer range of rock and heavy metal bands on offer.
