Exploring the Popularity of Music-Themed Slots

28/7/2021

You might enjoy playing on slot machines at land-based casinos or online slots at sites such as winkslots, but have you ever thought about how far back slots go? Believe it or not, this popular form of leisure entertainment goes as far back as the late 19th century, the time of the first variation of the slot machine.

The early machines didn’t pay out cash, however, so some attribute the invention of the first real slot machines to a man named Charles Fey, who invented the Liberty Bell, which paid cash prizes. Gradually, slot machines evolved throughout the ages and the world began to see electromechanical slots, video slots and, in the modern day, online slots.

Below is a look at online slots, focusing on the popularity of music-themed slots.

The importance of variety in the slots world
The online gaming industry is highly competitive and drives operators to keep coming up with fresh ideas. Not an easy task.

Slots are becoming more and more popular. The variety of themes gives operators an opportunity to offer players a slot with which they’ll enjoy engaging. Films, TV, music and a whole load of other themes create enjoyment for the players.

All of this generates brand loyalty to the operator. That’s precious in an industry in which players can easily move from one game to another if they get bored of a game or the operator’s selection is too small.

Inspired by music

Online gambling providers recognise the importance of music to the players overall experience.
Ever since computer games and casinos came about, music has been a part of the experience. Music creates atmosphere, allows the player to immerse themselves in the experience and adds to the excitement of the game.
In the earlier days, slot makers could overlay musical styles such as dance or pop over games. But then things grew more advanced and music artists — Michael Jackson being one of the most notable — began to license their name and music to games and the industry witnessed the increasing arrival of music-themed slots on the scene.

Why are music-themed slots so popular, though?

There’s a wide range of reasons why music-themed slots attract so much love from online gamers. Here are a couple:

Music directs the player
Music indicates how the player should feel while playing the game, whether that’s scared, excited or sad. Either way, the music serves as a compass during the game.

Players are hungry for nostalgia
In the case of older music on slots, such as classic rock, the music gives the players a sense of nostalgia that makes them feel comfortable while they’re playing. Some are so hungry for this nostalgia they’re even willing to fund creators who can develop games that transport them back to their childhood.

A few slots you might like to try
Of course, there are lots of amazing artists out there and, as a result, opportunities for music-themed slots. Classic rock slots have become especially popular, purely because they’re household names. Below are a couple of music slots you may wish to have a spin on:

Motörhead
Hard rocking and hard living, Lemmy and the boys have inspired an outstanding slot. You could happily turn up your speakers full blast and while away the hours on this one. Graphically, the slot is set on a live stage and the wild symbol… well, there’s only one it could be really, isn’t there? The ace of spades!

One of the big features of the gym is the Mystery Reel, consisting of a stacked reel of mystery symbols, and they appear in each spin of the base and free spins. If the reels stop spinning and a Mystery Reel mystery symbol is present, it transfers to a random symbol for bigger wins.

The Bomber feature is immense. Trigger this in the base game before a spin takes place and a collection of bombs will go off, creating 10 or more overlay of mystery symbols. Each bomb carries 15 mystery overlay symbols all up for grabs. The reels spin with the mystery symbols in place, plus a randomly chosen symbol from the Mystery Reel.

Jimi Hendrix
The Jimi Hendrix slot is another favourite with online slots players, perfectly understandable when it’s based on the greatest guitarist many would say there has ever been. It’s a five-reeler with three rows and twenty paylines. The game features wilds, respins, a pick and click bonus and lots of multiple free spins.

One of the nice touches is the naming of the bonuses and some of the symbols, with several of these being some of the late guitar wizard’s most famous songs. The Purple Haze symbol transforms low-value symbols from A10 across into wilds for that spin when it lands on the first reel.

Meanwhile, the Crosstown Traffic free spins bonus offers you six free spins, each with a wild. The Purple Haze bonus one gives you six to twelve free spins and all the low paying card royal symbols will turn wild. Then there’s the Little Wing free spins round, which, if you land three Little Wing symbols during the Pick and Click round will give you six to twelve spins. Three and five wild overlay symbols will appear on each spin.

Music-themed slots are popular and engage players with music by some of their favourite musicians. They can even take them back to their childhoods. There’s plenty of variety, too, so if you’re a big fan of more than one band or musician, you’ve got a good chance of finding a slot based on them and their music.
