In that exclusive club where she is best known by her first name only, singer Tiffany Darwish made her indelible mark on music with her self-titled debut album in 1987. Thrust into the limelight on the back of the worldwide success of single ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’, the California native has since celebrated three decades in music. Having released tenth solo album ‘Pieces of Me’ in late 2018, Tiffany is now preparing to hit the road for some extensive touring, which includes a stop off in Henley-Upon Thames for Rewind Festival. We caught up with Tiffany at Ultimate NAMM night in California, to chat touring, the new set, and her love of metal music. Away into the night; Eamon O’Neill & Neil Jones.
Hi Tiffany, Welcome to Ultimate Namm Night.
Thank you! I’ve waited a long time to do this. I thought it would be exciting. What brings you here tonight? Well, I’m performing, and just getting back in the swing of things, really. I’m doing my new single ‘Beautiful’, and ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’. But I’m touring ostensibly, and I’m here to kind of show off the new band – The Killing Floor, that are with me. We’ve just signed up for a tour for the next couple of years, so it’s great; new music, and some retro stuff as well. I’m just living, and loving music, you know? You were spotted at Dimebash in Santa Ana the other night. I know, it was fun! I’m from California, and I’ve always had metal in me. I mean, I grew up with things like Led Zeppelin and Stevie Nicks who’s my all-time hero, Anne Wilson from Heart – her voice, right? What do you say about that!? So this is just a natural progression. These people have always inspired me, so it’s great to get all of their inspiration and have kind words for the new album ‘Pieces of Me’. So it’s kind of full circle. I’m really thrilled, just all smiles right now, living my dream. Are you a bit of a closet metal head? Yes, totally. Hello! People should know this! [Laughing] I’ve done a lot of interviews, and my influences have always been out there. You’ve been in the industry since you were 16; what was it like to have such phenomenal success from the off? It was overwhelming. You can’t really prepare yourself. I don’t think at any age you can prepare yourself, so being a young artist at the time, it was overwhelming. But I mean, I loved it; it’s everything I want to do. So now I’m going to go in, and celebrating thirty years in the industry. And I never really got burned out. I mean, I’m always growing and writing music, and now I’m touring again, so I’m very, very excited. You play all over the world these days.
We’ve just been playing the big venues, small venues; whatever it takes to get the message out there. Do you ever tire if performing 'I Think We're Alone Now'? No! I’m a live performer, so it’s what I do best. I’m grateful for my beginnings, so I have to start there. But, yeah, I mean, obviously you want people to know what you’re doing now and everything, and when you say; “Oh, I have a new album”, I’m like; “Please, just go check it out!” I hope you like it, because honestly, I think it’s the best album I’ve ever recorded. When can we expect to see you back in Europe? Well, there’s tonnes of things I’m doing, extensive touring in the UK, and then I come back here to the US, and I bring the album here to America in April, so I’m very excited. So yeah, go to TiffanyTunes.com and check out all the touring and all the new music! Like this interview? Like us on FaceBook and follow us on Twitter for regular updates & more of the same!
