Casually strolling onto the stage of the impressive Markthalle at the remarkably early time of 8.15pm, the singer looks entirely humbled by the enthusiastic greeting the bad are receiving before they've even played a note.
It's not long before his bandmates join him, going straight into the groove of 'Pressure', and then the trippy beats of 'Fade Away', the first and second of a colossal eight tracks from 'Connected'. And it's not long before the 76 million Spotify-streamed title track arrives, just twenty minutes in, to obvious delight of the crowd.
The hit might go down a storm, but the Hamburg natives are loving every minute and it shows, for as the night continues, there's barely a let up in the adulation that the four-piece are receiving. This is of course helped by the fact that the sound is crystal clear throughout, with DJ Nick Hallam and percussionist Tansay Omar laying it down for Birch and not so secret weapon, co-vocalist Cath Coffey to do their thing over.
And while Birch prowls the stage, rapping and delivering his hypnotic lead vocals, Coffey gets lost in the music, howling like a banshee and raising the hairs on the back of necks with her eloquent tones, particularly on an electrifying 'Elevate my Mind'.
A trip hop take on 'Step It Up' mixes things up, as does the dub of 'Ground Level'. "What it's all about is raising the vibration and creating a positive atmosphere", offers Birch, as the first set comes to a close.
From there the energy level lifts again, with crowd interaction, and a fantastic playoff between Birch and Omar as the night progresses.
"It's a trip being here, really", says the frontman as the night reaches its climax after a well-earned second encore.
As the final notes fade and the cheers linger in the rafters of the Markthalle, it’s clear that Stereo MC’s return to Hamburg has been a long time coming, and the band leave the stage looking genuinely moved, with their connection with the crowd feeling genuinely palpable.
In a city that’s seen its fair share of legendary acts, Stereo MC’s once again proved why their sound continues to resonate.
