Debut Album: Band Gains Traction
Geese actually independently released their first record back in 2018, an indie art punk record that has since been removed from all streaming platforms.
Projector is widely considered their proper debut, which was complimented for having an energetic and inventive sound, which was reminiscent of The Strokes and more modern post-punk bands like Squid (but still maintaining a unique sound and style).
It was considered a ‘remarkable debut’ by many, placing Geese into a cult band status.
Adopting the Cowboy Aesthetics
Geese moved from a distinctly underground band to one gaining strong attention with their sophomore record, 3D Country. The theme of this album blended a modern post-punk energy with a more retro American theme to it, tying it with strong Western imagery.
The main concept of the album was the persona of a cowboy who navigates a desert landscape. Perhaps this imagery was a big part of the album's appeal, as cowboys are a popular theme in much of modern culture. Movies such as The Power of the Dog and video games like Red Dead Redemption (and its sequel) have garnered great success and praise. The genre is also especially prominent as slot titles in the online casino industry, with standouts including Cowboys Gold and Cash Carts™ Western Wagon™. These titles have proven especially attractive to a wave of new players who may taken up this form of entertainment through regular welcome slots offers. All this is to say that the Western aesthetic is undeniably everywhere right now, and this new Geese album appears to have found the sweet spot in terms of its appeal within this climate.
The album tied modernity with nostalgia, giving a sincere country style with a chaotic but controlled “jam band” style that made it unique compared to outputs by contemporary post-punk bands.
Getting Killed and Gaining International Stardom
Before their latest release, Geese frontman Cameron Winter put out a solo effort, ‘Heavy Metal’, at the end of 2024, which gained both critical and fan praise alike. It was lauded for its raw, emotive songwriting and unique vocals, with many publications, such as Pitchfork and Post-Trash, naming it their album of the year.
Due to this, by the time Getting Killed was released in September 2025, the band were already on the cusp of stardom. With two critically acclaimed albums and a popular solo debut, fans were eagerly waiting for their next output.
Getting Killed incorporated a lot of dark, chaotic themes with hit tracks including "Taxes", "100 Horses", and "Trinidad". It reached the top of industry charts, and it was the top of the ‘best of’ list for many music publications.
